Jane S. Welch, Attorney

Jane chairs the Financial Restructuring practice group at Morrison Sund. Her practice is focused on representing parties involved in commercial bankruptcy cases nationwide, business work outs and creditor’s rights.  She has experience representing creditors, creditors’ committees, debtors and preference defendants, and has assisted in the reorganization of a number of businesses in and outside of bankruptcy.  In addition, Jane enjoys representing entrepreneurs who aspire to take their businesses to the next level. 

Jane earned her JD from William Mitchell College of Law in 1982 and her B.A. from Ripon College.  She is admitted to practice in Minnesota, the federal courts of Minnesota and Wisconsin, before the Eighth Circuit Bankruptcy Appellate Panel.  Following law school, Jane served as a judicial law clerk for Hon. Robert J. Kressel in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Minnesota. Prior to joining Morrison Sund, Jane was a partner at the former Rider Bennett law firm.

She is a member of the Minnesota State Bar Association; she has chaired the Bankruptcy Section and served as the Editor of its publication, The Bankruptcy Bulletin. Jane is a former officer and board member of the Minnesota Chapter of the Federal Bar Association.  She coauthored a chapter on bankruptcy appeals in The MSBA 8thCircuit Appellate Manual. She is also a contributing author of the recently published Minnesota Continuing Legal Education, Bankruptcy Practice in Minnesota Deskbook. Jane is also a member of the Hennepin County Bar Association and the American Bankruptcy Institute. She is a frequent speaker on topics relating to bankruptcy, creditors’ rights and business organizations for Minnesota Continuing Legal Education and other legal and industry organizations.  Minnesota Law and Politics had regularly selected Jane as a “Super Lawyer”.

Jane currently serves on the Board and executive committee of The Normandale Community College Foundation.  She also chairs the Board of the Firefly Sisterhood, a non-profit organization that matches individuals facing a breast cancer diagnosis with trained guides who have been through that experience.  In the past, Jane served on the Hopkins Education Foundation Board as a board member and as a member of the executive committee. Jane served on the Governance Subcommittee for the Girl Scout Council Realignment Committee that engineered the merger of five councils in Southern Minnesota and Western Wisconsin into the Girl Scout of Minnesota and Wisconsin River Valleys.   She served on the Advisory Board for the College of St. Catherine’s Institute for Women Entrepreneurs since its inception and continues to be involved in and support organization helping women entrepreneurs grow their businesses. She is also an active volunteer for the Mother Bear Project.  

Jane hales from Rochester, Minnesota and now lives in Minnetonka with her husband and son.  In her free time Jane enjoys reading, cooking and spending time with family and friends, especially at her family’s cabin on the Mississippi River.
