Cynthia L. Hegarty, Attorney

Cynthia L. Hegarty is a member of the firm’s litigation and bankruptcy/financial restructuring practice areas. With over 20 years’ experience representing clients in all phases of state and federal court litigation, Cynthia focuses her practice in the areas of bankruptcy, workouts and financial restructuring, creditors’ rights and remedies, financial litigation, and trust and estate disputes and litigation.

Cynthia represents debtors, creditors, landlords, bidders, buyers, and other parties in interest in all aspects of Chapter 7, 11 and 13 bankruptcy proceedings, including avoidable transfer and preference litigation, Section 363 sales, relief from stay motions, student loan adversary cases, nondischargeability actions, plan negotiation, and reaffirmation agreements.

Cynthia also represents parties in complex commercial litigation in matters involving contract and statutory disputes in state and federal courts, handling trials, appeals, and mediation and arbitration proceedings. She assists secured creditors with corporate financing workout negotiations and other lending matters. She also works closely with the firm’s Trusts and Estates team, representing personal representatives and trustees in probate and fiduciary litigation to assist families in resolving probate and trust administration disputes.

Prior to joining Morrison Sund in 2016, Cynthia spent over 16 years at a larger Minneapolis firm focusing her practice in the areas of commercial litigation and bankruptcy.

Cynthia earned her bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1993, and her juris doctorate in 1996 from Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago-Kent College of Law.

Cynthia is a member of the Minnesota State Bar Association’s Bankruptcy Section, serving as treasurer for the 2017-2018 fiscal year, and secretary for the 2018-19 fiscal year. She is also a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute, the American Bar Association, and the Hennepin County Bar Association. She provides volunteer legal services through Volunteer Lawyers Network and Legal Corps. Cynthia is also a member of the bar of the state of Illinois.

In her spare time, Cynthia is an avid hockey, dance, baseball, softball, and 4-H mom. She enjoys coaching youth robotics teams, serving as a catechist at St. Victoria Parish Family, and spending time with her husband and three children at their family’s cabin. Ask her about their llama!
